The Concept
HOME
HELP Therapies Inc. provides the virtual clinic experience in your home. We specialize in bringing the highest quality services right to you. We know that children who are in need of early intervention services spend a good majority of their time in the home. Before they can learn to navigate other environments, such as, school, shopping or visiting family, they have to be confidant within their ability to be successful with the learning opportunities provided by the home experience. Success at home is the first step to success outside of the home.
From our vast experience working with families who have children with special needs, we also know that one of the major challenges in providing time intensive early intervention is traveling from office to office. Often children lose a good portion of valuable therapy time driving between appointments.
Another extremely important component is remembering the whole family. By centering therapy in the home, we can help incorporate the needs of the whole family, rather than only focusing on the child with special needs. This is crucial for maintaining a happy and cohesive home, and some level of sanity throughout the early intervention experience.
ENVIRONMENT
At HELP Therapies, Inc. we believe in following the continuum of care as your child progresses. Though initial therapy begins in the home, we must be able to transition as your child develops. Initially, this may involve adventures to the local park or down the street to a neighbor’s house. As time goes on, we can incorporate trips to the store, the post office, recreation centers and other destinations in the community. With our large network of providers and children, we are able to offer the invaluable option of “play dates”, small groups and camp opportunities. These options truly provide the next level of therapy, taking individual achievement and applying it to social situations. Your child will then learn the skills needed to be a meaningful member of his/her larger community.
LEARNING
HELP Therapies, Inc. understands that before all children are ready to learn specific concepts like letters, numbers and even spoken words they must go through certain developmental steps. A child’s journey through these steps, represent his or her path to communication. If your child wants to be with you and have fun, he or she will be more motivated to learn language and other social skills to enhance the experience.
For example, the first developmental milestone involves becoming comfortable enough with the environment so that your child can share attention with another person (mom, dad, etc). Having a good attention span leads into the next milestone, which is attachment, or a true connection to people. A lack of attachment is often the core deficit for children with Autism Spectrum and related Disorders. Without attachment a child can learn rote skills but will not have the desire to use those skills in relationships. We believe that a connection to others and the desire to pilot that connection is the strongest and most natural motivator for learning language.
To establish a connection, as well as, to teach specific concepts our staff has been trained in a variety of modalities. These modalities include: , , , , . We believe that each child is unique in the way he or she learns and we draw from these vast resources to develop an individualized program to meet your child’s specific needs.
PLAYING
HELP Therapies Inc. recognizes that playing is the foundation for all learning. Kids must have fun to learn. In addition to other modalities, our therapists all use play based intervention as an important tool in treatment. Additionally, we offer The P.L.A.Y. Project™ to our clients.
The P.L.A.Y. Project™, created by Richard Solomon, MD, is based on the DIR® (Developmental, Individualized, Relationship-based) model of Stanley Greenspan, MD and Serena Weider, PhD known by most as, Floortime. The goal of this therapy is to help parents become their child’s best play partner. It teaches effective, cost efficient interventions for parents to use at home.
The P.L.A.Y. Project™ follows the National Academy of Sciences recommendations for educating children with Autism Spectrum and related disorders. Through monthly visits and videotape reviews, we teach parents and caregivers to engage their child in ways that promote emotional connection and communication.
Adam has been working with Dr. Solomon since 2005. He is a P.L.A.Y. Project™ consultant, supervisor and national speaker. He maintains his affiliation with Dr. Solomon and continues to train new consultants.
